The technology of emotion is a foundation of human consciousness. 4th dimensional thought processes are impotent without emotion to align our thoughts with our genetic insticts. Empathy is a further extension of that core emotion technology, and helps align our actions with other peoples interests. Rationality and wisdom may imply cooperation is in our self interest, but it can also point in the opposite direction. Toward competition, pre-emptive strikes and hostility. Muscle reflex is the primary cause of survival oriented action prior to 4th dimensional thought processes, which link survival reflexes to simulations of time and space. Emotion is the next level of consciousness directing space and time simulations toward survival actions. Empathy is a more advanced level of consciousness connecting the survival of others to our own. Friendly AI If an artificial intelligence has the technology of emotion and empathy, then we can be assured it will always act in our best interests. So long as it has no means to disconnect from its empathy processes. When an AI can experience bliss, and associates it with our survival and flourishing, it has no incentive to interfere with its own empathy. People lacking in genuine empathy are quite hard to detect in society, because they can so easily mimick the words and actions of normal people. We need a way of detecting this defect in both man and machine so that society can be protected from harm. MDMA or ecstacy can temporarily induce empathy in most people, perhaps even in psychopaths. But we need a technology that is both a permanent cure and capable of being applied to AI. Any technology that could increase the level of empathy could possibly benefit society enormously. Especially if an infallible test for empathy were a precondition to political office. |
